Aloha... welcome to our website. YakHawaii was created by Paul Belmudes to be an online resource of kayak fishing experiences, journeys and knowledge. Our fishing is done on the Big Island of Hawaii and it is our goal is to share our resources of Hawaii kayak fishing in an informative way to help those new or experienced to the sport of kayak fishing. Nothing can be more extreme then trolling for pelagic fish on a sit-on-top kayak made out of plastic. Imagine fishing the steep slopes of the ocean bottom within a short distance from the Hawaiian shoreline, rod in hand and your reel screaming "fish-on" not knowing what is on the other end of the line. If you ever have the opportunity to kayak fish in Hawaii, there are several varieties of fish in that you can hanapa'a (hook-up). These varieties include six species of billfish roaming the coastal waters, six species of tuna, mahi mahi (dorado), ono (wahoo), several species of shark and a wide variety of big game bottom fish.

About Paul...

In 2006, Paul read an article about kayak fishing in Hawaii Fishing News magazine written by Steve Heusser of Scream'n Reel Videos. Paul wanted to know more about this extreme sport and contacted Steve who said, "The Big Island kayak fishermen that were gracing the pages of the magazine and catching the pelagics fished Wednesdays at Keauhou Bay." Paul took his advice and waited by the shoreline one Wednesday and met Reggie Pare' and Cory Saget coming in after fishing that morning. Reggie and Cory were kind enough to talk story, showed their catch and how their kayaks were rigged and invited Paul to fish with them the following week. With excitement, Paul purchased his first kayak, rod & reel, fishing gear and got ready for his encounter! During these last four years, Paul has met a lot of talented yak anglers and regularly fishes up and down the west coast of the Big Island. In June 2008, Paul was lucky enough to win the Big Island "YakAttack" kayak fishing tournament with a 48.6 pound Ulua.  Enjoy the website!
